50 Shades of Sahara

Finally we got to Erg Chegaga. It is one of the two places in Morocco where there are sanddunes. Et was a long and rough ride from Foum Zquid on a rocky road with 15-20 km/h, so we had to wildcamp once again in the desert.

Opposite the rocky deserts in Western Sahara, you are not alone here, there is actually some traffic in the form of offroad-turists and there is restaurants and tents! The road we drove was not that used, but from the dunes to Mhamed we met a whole army of local Landcruisers filled with pale people in turbans on the way out to singalong around the campfire and spending the night in tents.

Erg Chegaga is said to be the non-touristy one of the two, so there must be a lot of traffic at Erg Cheggi!

The sand is surprisingly hard, until you come to a halt, then you start to sink. The Volvo did really good, but it is easiest if you keep the pace. The dangerous part is that everything is orange-brown, so it is difficult to see when there is a 20m straight down drop or where you will get caught in a pot with edges so steep that you won’t get back up!

We met 2 boys that were walking aside some camels in the middle of stony nothing, we managed to explain them that we would like to ride them. Not really comfortable, but fun :-)

We actually expected that there would be a lot of places selling camel-rides, but we haven’t seen any. Maybe it is only guided tours all the way out to the tents?
